NRTLs and Product Safety
Underwriters Laboratories (UL) - UL still holds the status as the most widely recognized of the Nationally Recognized Test Laboratories (NRTLs) in the US, although other NRTLs have been making up significant ground in recent years. In addition to being a convenient 10 minute drive from our lab here in San Jose, UL is a former employer of our founder (almost five decades ago!)
TUV Rheinland of North America - Product safety certification for both national standards (US and Canadian), European Norms (EN) and international standards. SEL has worked with TUV Rheinland since the mid-1980s.
Canadian Standards Association (CSA) - We have worked with the CSA since 1977, and most often work with the Pacific Region office in Vancouver, Irvine, or Rexdale for older traditional technologies.
OSHA's List of Nationally Recognized Test Laboratories (NRTLs) - Visit this website to see the the list of the 15 or so additional NRTLs in the US.
Accredited Certification Bodies by Standards Council of Canada (SCC) - Visit this website to see the the list of these organizations accredited for Canadian installations.
EMC
CKC Laboratories - A partner lab of SEL's, founded in 1973, CKC Laboratories is a full service EMC test lab, utilizing the latest EMC test equipment and holding laboratory accreditations that span the globe. SEL personnel often test at CKC Labs, with an efficient partnership to serve our clients.
Bureau Veritas (BV) - Another partner lab of SEL's that is in Milpitas and right around the corner really from SEL. This lab has been in business since 2003 and was called Siemic before being bought out by BV.
Federal Communications Commission - The FCC is an independent United States government agency. The FCC was established by the Communications Act of 1934 and is charged with regulating interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite and cable. The FCC's jurisdiction covers the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. possessions.
STANDARDS
UL Standards - The non-IEC based standards and US national deviations to IEC-based standards are free to UL customers that have finished a UL Listing. IEC-based standards do have a reduced fee from what is charged generally by other vendors.
CSA Standards - While some standards from UL are binational and you are looking effectively at the same document for both, some industries have standards that are non harmonized whatsoever.
IEC - Although rarely is an IEC standard legally required for formal certifications, it is often the basis for other standards that are in fact required. IEC includes participation from around the world, and the US is a member equivalent to each other member, including those in Europe.
CENELEC - CENELEC is the e European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization and is responsible for standardization in the electrotechnical engineering field. CENELEC prepares voluntary standards, which help facilitate trade between countries, create new markets, cut compliance costs and support the development of a Single European Market. CENELEC adopts European Norms (EN) Standards that are legally required under the European Directives for the European Union.
American National Standards Institute (ANSI) - The Institute oversees the creation, promulgation and use of thousands of norms and guidelines. ANSI is also actively engaged in accrediting programs that assess conformance to standards – including globally-recognized cross-sector programs such as the ISO 9000 (quality) and ISO 14000 (environmental) management systems
WORLDWIDE
IEEE - A non-profit organization, IEEE is the world's leading professional association for the advancement of technology. The IEEE name was originally an acronym for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. Today, the organization's scope of interest has expanded into so many related fields, that it is simply referred to by the letters I-E-E-E (pronounced "Eye-triple-E"). The Product Safety Engineering Society (PSES) is the most recent Society added in its own right, after being under the wing of the EMC Society for many years.
Product Safety Engineering Society (PSES) - SEL had a critical role in the 1980s in what ended up evolving into the PSES. More recently, SEL has hosted meetings for its local Santa Clara Chapter.
ENVIRONMENTAL
Quanta Labs - Another of SEL's partner labs, with its focus on shock & vibration, ESS, HALT/HASS, temperature, humidity, altitude, and NEBS testing. Located in San Jose, CA.
